Filomena Roberts
Filomena Roberts,
House Plants,
Mixed media on A3 paper
In my art practice I mainly use inks and acrylic on paper and canvas. I also like to make collages (“Greenwashing”), small sculptures (“found objects screws), and the “odd” photograph (This spring cleaning business is out of control”). My main themes are “people pictures” including portraying interpersonal relationships (Top to Toe”), as well as current events such as Australia’s love affair with real estate, climate change issues (“Frogsnomore Castle), religious dogma and the tally of lives (Every Conflict Ever”), the Ukraine War (“Surely You Jest?”) the plight of refugees and how we see them (“Heavy”), and of course COVID and its ramifications (“The Princess and the Peas”). Politics affects all aspects of our everyday lives and I like to use my own take on things to make people stop for a moment and maybe see something a bit unusual.
I have been “practising” art for many decades and I am grateful for it. I have so many pictures yet to make, small sketches waiting to be brought to “life”, a larger version of the fleeting or persistent idea. My inspirations are many and include cartoonists. I admire how they are able to get to the nub of a story every day. Sometimes they seem to be quick sketches, sometimes something more akin to an artwork. While cartoons in the paper must be relevant to a particular story and are quickly yesterday’s news, I aspire to be half as good as them in my own way.
